Do you remember Kid’s Say The Darndest Things (click here), originally started by Art Linkletter? What a great show! I think there should be a show called “Medication Commercials Say The Darndest Things.” Seriously, there are some crazy ones out there – like the one I’ve talked about before where a man is carrying a vile of green goo around on his shoulder. The vile is huge and is weighing him down as he tries to move about. Turns out that the green goo is uric acid. But don’t expect the pharmaceutical company to educate you on healthy eating, no siree bob. They are going to sell you their product and then, as a side note, will list all the possible side effects.
How about they educate the public and inform us all on what uric acid really is and what its sources are? Could they teach us ways to avoid it? Are there measures that we, as individuals, can take to participate in our own health rather than sit back and let our doctor(s) dictate the show? Unfortunately this will not happen. Information like this is kept from us. But, if we take control of our lives and get active for our own wellbeing, then we can find all these answers. Seek and you will find!
Sometimes the answer can be as simple as changing your lifestyle. But what is changing your lifestyle? Actually, that could mean different things to different people. For me it was changing the foods I eat, incorporating exercise, letting go of the negative forces in my life and focusing on the positive. It also meant staying close to God and embracing my spiritual side.
Sure, it’s a good idea to see a doctor when you experience symptoms. A doctor visit will allow you to know where you stand and what you are dealing with. Usually one condition is related or caused by another. For example, gout and high uric acid levels can be associated with other medical conditions such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar, heart disease, and kidney problems. So a medical exam is probably a great idea. However, my experience has taught me that once you begin seeing and being treated by a doctor, then you are pretty much committed for the years to follow. It soon becomes a series of tests and one medication after the other. Then you are dealing with side effects from the medication; it turns into an endless, vicious cycle. I opt to listen to my body. It tells me what I need to do. Healthy living is the best medication you can possible give to yourself. What are you waiting for?
We are not taught to seek natural cures. Actually, it’s been frowned upon for the longest time, and those who did were called ‘freak’s’ or ‘weirdoes’.’ I’m so glad the world is ever-changing and people are opening up now to the idea of natural cures and healthy eating/living. People are turning ‘green’ and wanting to not only save themselves, but also our planet. What’s wrong with that? It’s nice, and ‘nice’ is a rarity. So people who do and say nice things usually get mocked. It’s quite odd how it works this way. The good news is that more and more people are discovering natural cures. They are opening their hearts and minds to a new way of thinking and finally accepting what they’ve been shunning for years. This means more nice people in our world! Yeah!
Pretty soon these commercials will be shot down because the absurdity will become obvious to all. Will you continue to take medicine for your high uric acid levels or change your diet and start exercising? Will you participate in your own health and reach optimal mind and body by avoiding the bad stuff and embracing the good stuff?
For those of us who suffer from stiff, achy joints & gout, we should know that purines are natural substances that can drive up uric acid levels and are found in alcohol, red meat, organ meat, shellfish and fructose. I bet you didn’t know that fad diets, or what I call YO-YO dieting (quick or extreme diets), can cause sudden weight loss which can increase the amount of uric acid in the body, especially if you rely on high-protein fad diets. Get rid of your belly flab…NOW! Gout has been associated with THE BIG BELLY you’re carrying around; especially if you have high blood pressure or elevated blood sugar. Even aspirin and other meds can raise uric acid. Read up, do your own research! Information on any medication you are currently taking can be provided by your doctor. Get out into the world and exercise: ride a bike, hike, walk, jog, work-out @ the YMCA, try yoga – physical activities such as these will prevent weight gain and keep you flexible, not to mention what it will do for your mental outlook. Gout attacks can be caused from lack of water, so stay hydrated. Water will flush the uric acid out of your body. High-fructose corn syrup, found in soda is known to raise uric acid so trade it in for a glass of water or perhaps some almond coconut milk! Ask questions; seek information; research and study all you can; join support groups, etc., do what you must to harness your health and live life to its fullest. Participate in your health!
