In the ME-gan world, we like products that are marked VEGAN and GLUTEN FREE; it makes things so simple for us, really. The only thing that could possibly be better is to have them marked ME-gan Friendly! We could all be assured that this product is not only gluten free, but it’s also dairy, egg, and meat free as well! Now THAT would make life so easy for us ME-gans!!
If something is marked ‘wheat free’ …beware! It may contain gluten from other sources such as barley, rye, or something derived from them. Wheat is an allergen and must be labeled, but the others are not. It can get tricky, so be knowledgeable, it’s your best defense! The same goes with items marked “dairy free,’ this does not mean ‘egg’ free. And certainly, what’s gluten free does not mean it’s vegan, and vice versa. It doesn’t take much, only a little dedication and time, and you’ll be a NEW YOU in no time!
Every ME-gan cupboard should have these:
- dry beans & lentils
- rice (arborio, basmati and several wild rice blends)
- canned beans and veggies
- chickpea flour
- rice flours
- gluten free all-purpose flour mix
- cornmeal and cornstarch
- xanthan gum (for baking and thickening of sauces/gravies)
- gluten free cereals
- gluten free pastas
- Jarred (ME-gan) marinara sauces
- gluten free soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, peanut sauce (and more)… San-J is a great brand
- rice noodles
- nut butters
Fresh produce, legumes, nuts & seeds are naturally gluten free, but once you start heading towards the packaged goods you best start reading labels. This doesn’t mean you won’t be able to have your favorite foods ever again, but it does mean that change and adjustments are here to stay! Most supermarkets today offer just about everything you need to live a successful and happy ME-gan life. Why it was only a few years ago that one would have to go to a ‘health food’ store to buy specialty flours and mixes, but not anymore! The train has left the station folks, so you better hurry and catch up to it! Jump aboard and don’t miss out on BETTER HEALTH!
Quick tip love…
