Eating healthy while traveling takes some effort and dedication. Airport food can be quite challenging, so I suggest packing your own food to get you to your destination. We just arrived home from a five-day trip, and did just that…packed food for the flight. On the way up I had packed steamed mixed vegetables, sautéed tofu (which by the way, is great cold), green beans, raisins, bananas, and apples. We were set, and satisfied. We stayed at a hotel that had a full kitchen, which would have been terrific if we had  been able to buy and cook food.  However, being that we were constantly on the go, we ended up eating out. We do not do fast food, and look for those restaurants that prepare fresh salads,  grilled veggies, baked potatoes, and other ME-gan friendly foods.

The chains such as Applebee’s or Chili’s are more difficult to find items that are not covered with some kind of sauce, or made with hidden ingredients. If this is where you find yourself eating, ask your waiter for the list of ingredients. If they do not have the answer, you can talk to the Mgr. or even the kitchen Mgr.

Lee and I were very successful with finding healthy, delicious food during our trip this time, and are happy to share some photos with you. We had salads, baked potatoes, asparagus, grape leaves, hummus and more.

On the last day of our trip, while on the way to the airport, we stopped at a Mediterranean restaurant which served vegetarian/vegan stuffed grape leaves, and hummus. The food is made there, by them, and I verified all ingredients with the owner. We were able to take this food to go and eat at the airport. Even though we ate grape leaves and hummus at another restaurant during our trip, we never get tired of them.  Just be aware of the ingredients and preparation.

Surprisingly, on the flight home, we found that the airline served a convenient little package of Chips and Salsa. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that it was ME-gan friendly! Yes, the chips were made from flaxseed, quinoa and other gluten free grains. The salsa was pure and all natural - very delicious. This company will be hearing from me on their delicious, healthy snack product. Their package was clearly labeled too, which made it very easy for me to determine it was safe to eat. I LOVE that!

When we arrived home, I made a very nice, quick, but delicious dinner consisting of tofu, black beans and grilled asparagus. M-m-m…home cooking never tasted so good!

As I’ve mentioned before, I prefer to eat at home. I like to shop for my own food and prepare my own food. But, there will always been times when this is simply just not feasible. Be smart, know what to expect, get your game plan down and you’ll be successful!
